The Forest Hill Retirement Community is a full service retirement community providing residential care, including independent living and assisted living located in Pacific Grove, California. There is a portion of the property that was left as an oak woodland garden, but has been neglected and overgrown over the years. Due to the neglect, the space is underutilized and unsightly for the residents.
The space has been redesigned to become a garden again and encourages residence to visit and enjoy the space. Removing selected overgrown vegetation around the property gave way to a new planting design composition providing aesthetic statements, screening unwanted views, and providing a mix of vegetation that provides seasonal interest. An entry area has been created which adds a sense of arrival and entry to the garden. In addition, new circulation routes and seating nooks throughout the garden space have been incorporated. There is an “active gardening” space for residents who want to add to the garden compositions.
The vegetation is irrigated with the facility’s existing rainwater harvesting system.
